Welcome to the Ideas Brothers greetings card archive, showcasing creative work from our early career
1986, felt-tip on card
Written to celebrate Rob’s birthday, this DM by Tom captures a core truth about Rob (that he likes nature) and expresses it through a faux-naive illustration of a ladybird. The execution was a success in terms of relationship building, ensuring that Rob would reciprocate with a card of his own on Tom’s birthday.
1984, coloured pencil on feint ruled notebook paper
This disarming execution by Rob has to work hard to connect with the busy target audience, especially since there is no particular occasion to celebrate. Rather than go in for the hard sell, Rob has chosen to start a dialogue with the reader, inviting them to reflect on their feelings about the sun – something they might never have seriously considered before. Looking back, it might have been good to include a URL or other response mechanism for the customer to join in the conversation.
1995, marker pen on white paper
Back in the 90s the industry was a lot more casual about usage rights.

I note that the ladybird’s spots are of varied opaqueness between the halves, perhaps alluding to the duality of man.
Also, on looking at the size of the fish compared to its surroundings, I see this card as more of a call for understanding, the boy is becoming a man and wants his parents to accept that it is time for him to put away childish things - he is now a big fish in a small pond.
